I thought all musical acts performed live on the Ed Sullivan Show...no - lip synching. But, according to John Kay's autobiography, the only live part of the Wolf's performance was his singing over an edited medley of a tape Bill Cooper put together. Who's idea was it to do that? Why didn't the Wolf perform live?

I don't know but I don't think we were the only band to do that.

Due to time constraints, and arrangements (ie. brass, backround singers etc) there were quite a few bands that had to lip - synch. The best example would be the "Mama's and Paps's", who couldn't show up with a 36 piece mega band behind them.... I believe that even the Rolling Stones "ran tape" behind them for "Have you seen your mother baby...." Besides, due to union regulations in NYC, you had to pay string and horn sections union scale for EIGHT hours for a three minute appearance...........

It really doesn't matter whether Steppenwolf was live or not, cause i'm not sure Ed Sullivan was alive on stage for the last ten years of his show.
